DEADLIGHT

                                                                 DEADLIGHT
Deadlight is a sidescrolling survival horror cinematic platformer game for Xbox Live Arcade developed by Tequila Works and published by Microsoft Studios.

Plot

The story of the game takes place in 1986 in Seattle after the decimation of society following the outbreak of a virus that reanimates the dead. Randall Wayne is a survivor of the event and since been separated from his family of his wife, Shannon, and daughter Lydia. Randall had joined a pack of survivors formed of his friend Ben, an officer named Sam and two sisters, Stella and Karla. Randall is seen killing Karla in the beginning of the game due to her being bitten and infected. When the others return and confront him, "Shadows", the term for the undead, struggle to get inside their room. The others are able to get away through a vent but Randall gets stuck in the room and tells them to get to a safe area aptly called the "Safe Point". Randall is able to escape the area alive and begin traversing the dilapidated Seattle world.
As Randall continues to make it through the fallen city, he learns of a reckless and violent militia known as "The New Law" that has started to fend for itself by using any means possible. Randall later finds a dying Sam who is bleeding to death after being ambushed by The New Law, who are proven to be malicious and only caring for themselves, making a false hope "Safe Point" actually a trap for other survivors. Knowing the safe point can hold his family and the other survivors, Randall decides to head over there to rescue them. He continues to travel to the safe point but while running away from the Shadows, he is cornered. Before they can reach him, a mysterious hand comes from the man hole and drags Randall down. Randall begins to have strange dreams and flashbacks at life before and at the exact point of the aftermath that started the virus. Randall meets the "Rat"; a strange sewer dweller that has made the sewers his home and occupied it with booby traps to kill the Shadows. Randall is forced to make it through the Rat's labyrinth in the sewers without his equipment. When Randall successfully makes it through though, the Rat notices his teenage son has disappeared to the surface to see his old home. The Rat promises Randall that he will search for his wife and daughter if he can find the teenager.

Randall agrees and sets out to the surface to find the boy but does not find him at the house and sees that the boy returns to the house to see his mother's shrine. Randall heads out to find him but is chased by the Shadows. He enters a vehicle to escape but soon crashes after tumbling down. Randall is contacted on a radio though by an unkown person and he is able to escape the vehicle to the top of a building roof. The person is revealed to be the Rat's son who went to look for food but just as they confront each other, The New Law hunt them down in a helicopter even though they are clearly alive. The duo evade The New Law and make it down back to the Rat, who gives the location of a stadium where The New Law are keeping the safe point but could not find Randall's wife or daughter. Randall finds the stadium and sees Ben being captured and tortured by The New Law who leave a Shadow to kill him. Randall rescues Ben and together they make it to a helicopter but Ben requests medical needs and tasks Randall to go into the local hospital to find supplies. After getting the supplies and exiting the hospital, Randall and Ben escape in the copter but later, Ben passes out at the wheel, causing the copter to crash.
Ben dies in the crash but Randall survives and makes it to the safe point but finds it to be already overrun and deserted with no survivors. The New Law spot and stop Randall though and eventually capture him. In the facility of The New Law, Randall sees that Stella has been captured as well and plans to save her. Randall escapes his imprisonment and kills Stella's guards and the duo begin to escape the facility. To stop The New Law and secure their escape through, Randall turns off a power generator, letting in a horde of Shadows that kill off many of The New Law soldiers. Randall and Stella make it to a dock but are cornered by the Shadows in which Stella asks Randall to kill her. This sparks a repressed memory in Randall's mind that reminds him that he himself had killed Shannon and Lydia when they were trapped by the Shadows as well. Randall then tells Stella she must always try to survive and never give up hope because the choices we do make us who we are.
Randall breaks the wood of the dock and sends Stella into the water where she makes it to a sailboat and drifts off. Randall apologizes to his deceased daughter, knowing he should have died with her instead of giving them a mercy killing. Randall states that he is ready to finally die and is killed by the oncoming horde of Shadows as the game ends.

Gameplay

Deadlight is a 3D/2D sidescroller game in which the character can only move from left to right and cannot enter environments except for the aligned path. The game consists of puzzles that the player must pass as he tries to survive from being killed by "Shadows"; humans who have become zombies. Players are told to avoid all Shadows at all costs and not go into combat. Combat revolves around using melee attacks with a fire axe that is found during the game that requires stamina seen in the energy bar or later when the player is able to find a revolver to shoot. The game insists that combat be avoided because of the rising danger the player might confront as they stay longer and begin attracting more enemies, eventually leading to the player being swarmed and killed due to low health or low ammo. The player character is shown to have three health points that can be replenished if hurt by using first aid kits they can find. The health point numbers can increase by a single point if the player can find power ups around the environment. Stamina is also an important role as running and fighting can lower it down leading the player to rest and regain energy.
The game also contains hidden collectable items strewn throughout its levels. As the game progresses, the player can find dead bodies and pick up their identification documents (IDs). The IDs in the game are that of actual serial killers or psychopaths that were active during that time, example; J.W. Gacy is John Wayne Gacy or Albert DeSalvo, the Boston Strangler. Other items include gaming devices that are more hidden
